    Position Title: Court Interpreter

    Job Location: Fifteenth Judicial Circuit, West Palm Beach, Florida

    Salary Range: $2,756.38 - $5,237.12 (Monthly)*

    *The successful candidate will be hired at the minimum salary.

    This is specialized professional work providing foreign language interpreting services for specific proceedings for the judiciary and various court service programs. Duties include interpreting various proceedings such as first appearances, arraignments, preliminary hearings, pretrial motions trials and other court-related proceedings. The position performs sight translation of appropriate foreign language or English documents as required during court-related events; provides consecutive and simultaneous interpretation between languages, expressing exact translation, rendering oral interpretation of statements or materials for court proceedings, and broadcasting or giving the interpretation to the court or over an electronic audio/video system for immediate translation to facilitate communication between all parties of the proceeding. Work may be performed at various branch courts and/or in a courtroom, judge’s chambers, attorney’s office, jail, detention center, hospital or any other site. Working relationships are established with judges, judicial staff, attorneys, court administrative staff, State Attorney’s Office, Public Defender’s Office, other state and county agencies and the general public. The Court Interpreter works under the general supervision of a Supervising Court Interpreter.

    EDUCATION AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:

    Graduation from an accredited college with an associates degree, and one year of interpreting, or any equivalent combination of related education, training and experience.

    Must complete a State of Florida orientation program and obtain a passing grade in both written and oral interpreter exam within one year of being employed as a Court Interpreter.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

    Knowledge of types of judicial proceedings. Knowledge of the theory, method, techniques, ethics and standards of interpreting and translating. Knowledge of English and appropriate foreign language legal terminology, phonology, vocabulary, grammar and dialectology. Ability to acquire a wide knowledge of the English-speaking cultures of the United States and specified foreign language-speaking cultures. Ability to speak English and the foreign language fluently, including regional colloquialisms and slang expressions. Ability to plan, organize, collect, interpret and analyze data, and maintain workflow. Ability to perform simple mathematical skills. Ability to communicate effectively and meet deadlines.

    *Ability to translate between Spanish and English, whether the language is spoken, written or recorded. Skill level must include slang and normal idioms. Proficiency in Microsoft Word.
