Trial Court Law Clerk (Judicial Staff Attorney)
Ninth Judicial Circuit, Orlando, Florida
The essential function of the position within the organization is to assist the judiciary with case management, pending litigation and issues, and/or process criminal and civil appeals. The position is responsible for drafting memoranda, opinions, orders and reports; conducting legal research; reviewing briefs and case files; and advising judges on pending litigation and issues. The position works under general supervision of the Chief Judge or designee.
*The Ninth Judicial Circuit seeks a Staff Attorney located at the Orange County Courthouse in Orlando, Florida. The Staff Attorney assists the judiciary with legal research and writing, case management, pending litigation, and appellate cases. The position will be assigned to work with several judges in a high volume work environment - researching legal issues, preparing memoranda and drafting proposed orders, in a timely manner. The ideal candidate will possess an interest and strong proficiency in researching technical legal issues and writing concise but well-reasoned orders. The selected candidate will demonstrate the ability to decide issues based on the merits of law while not advocating for one side or the other. Those applying must communicate clearly, effectively, and concisely, both verbally and in writing and demonstrate the confidence and demeanor to work directly with judges on complex legal issues. In addition, have the ability to work independently and mostly by computer; work in the courtroom is very limited. Law review or other journal experience or some other type of related writing program is preferred but not required.
Education and Training Guidelines
Education: Juris Doctor
Certification: Membership in the Florida Bar must be attained within one year from the date of hire
Conducts research to discover new methodologies or to find solutions for unresolved problems.
Counsels, instructs or trains others through explanation, demonstration, and supervised practice, or by making recommendations on the basis of technical disciplines.
Requires minimum responsibility for only small quantities of low cost items or supplies where opportunities for achieving economies or preventing loss are negligible.
Uses addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division; may compute ratios, rates, and percents.
Reads and interprets advanced professional materials; writes complex reports and papers; speaks to high level professional groups.
Complexity of Work:
Performs work involving the application of principles of logical thinking, scientific, medical, or legal practice to diagnose or define problems, collect data and solve abstract problems with widespread unit or organization impact; requires sustained, intense concentration for accurate results and continuous exposure to unusual pressure.
Impact of Decisions:
Makes decisions with moderate impact, may affect those in organization and general public.
Handles machines, tools, equipment, or work aids involving some latitude for judgment regarding attainment of standard or in selecting appropriate items, such as computers, peripherals, or software programs, such as word processing.
In order to apply, candidate must have a Juris Doctorate degree from an accredited law school. Salary is $45,817.20 per year. Salary is 10% below minimum ($41,235.48 per year) if the individual is not a member of the Florida Bar. Membership in the Florida Bar must be attained within one year from the date of hire. Must be proficient in Word and Westlaw/Lexis. This is a State funded position with benefits. The State Courts classification for the position is Trial Court Law Clerk.
